FAQs

What is a class like?

Breathwork is performed lying flat on a yoga mat in a sound-proof dance studio at Schafer Sports Center. I show clients the 3 part breathing pattern, then put on music to enhance the experience. We’ll have a few minutes of regular breathing to get you comfortable, and then progress to deep, continuous breathing to help surface and release suppressed feelings so they can be processed.

Focusing on the breath encourages mindfulness and presence in the moment. This heightened awareness can help break the cycle of negative thoughts and promote a sense of peace and grounding. There will be about 25 minutes of active breathing, followed by 25 minutes of restful breathing with a guided meditation. And that’s it!

How do I prepare for a class?

  • layers of comfortable clothing (some people get cold, others get hot)
  • nutritious light meal (you shouldn’t feel too full or too hungry)
  • yoga mat (if you don’t have one, contact me)
  • water bottle
  • small blanket

How do I prepare for a private session?

  • choose a time of day when you can have privacy and quiet
  • choose a spot in your home where we won’t be interrupted
  • if you have a dog, it’s best if they can be put away (especially if this is your first session)

I’ve heard that Breathwork can bring up trauma, is this true?

Yes, in addition to relieving stress, Breathwork does have the potential to “unlock” some stored hidden trauma. The good news is trauma brought to light can be healed. Breathwork allows the body to heal itself without talking. However, if you feel like you might not be ready, or don’t have adequate support if things do come up in the days that follow a session, this might not be for you. If you aren’t certain, please don’t hesitate to contact me with questions.

Is Breathwork dangerous?

No, not this practice. Breathwork is an umbrella term. There are many different types of Breathwork. Some types (like the Wim Hof Method) involve breath holds or speeding up breathing in ways that can cause people to hyperventilate. At Hopewell Breathwork, we never hold our breath or speed up our breathing rate. In contrast, we continuously breathe and the focus is on breathing deeply at a comfortable pace. You are in control the entire time. If you have a specific health concern, I would encourage you to talk to your doctor.

How often should I do Breathwork?

As often as you are able to make time for yourself. In this busy life, it is really easy to put our priorities everywhere else but on our own self-care. I would encourage you to try out a class and see how you feel. Some people find time to come every week or once a month. I find that I, personally, like to have a session at least once a week to feel my best.
